How To Handle A Clogged Toilet

Hunter Ford

Your toilet may not be glamorous, but it's an integral part of your home that allows you to dispose of waste safely and effectively. Under normal conditions, your toilet shouldn't clog. However, plumbing problems and user error can make it impossible to flush waste. Here are four tips that will help you handle a clogged toilet:

1. Use a plunger.

A plunger is an inexpensive tool that allows you to create suction in your toilet bowl. It can help you dislodge minor clogs without getting your hands dirty. Place the plunger directly over the hole in the bottom of your toilet bowl and make sure you get a good seal. Firmly press down on the plunger handle a few times before lifting it up. Repeat this process until the clogged water in the toilet bowl drains.

2. Flush the toilet again.

In some cases, the toilet doesn't drain after you flush it due to an incomplete flush. Flushing the toilet again may help to clear the remainder of the waste. Jiggling the toilet handle may also help. If you're unable to flush the toilet again due to low water in the toilet's tank, you can fill the tank using water from the sink.

3. Avoid overfilling the toilet.

Toilets are only meant to hold a certain amount of waste. If you overload a toilet with too much waste or toilet paper, you may clog it. Use a moderate amount of toilet paper, especially if you own a low-flow toilet. Never put certain things in the toilet, like tampons, sanitary napkins, or cotton swabs. These things don't break down like toilet paper, and they can become lodged in your pipes or septic tank.

4. Call a plumbing service.

If you've tried to clear a clogged toilet yourself to no avail, it's time to call for plumbing services. Sometimes clogged waste matter becomes so impacted that a simple plunger cannot dislodge it. In these cases, a plumber will need to use a toilet auger to reach deep into your pipes to break up any clogs. Don't try to do this yourself, since you may splash wastewater on your floor as an untrained person.

A clogged toilet doesn't have to ruin your day. Follow these four simple steps to get your toilet back in good working order. Avoid clogs by taking the proper precautions and always keep the number of a good plumbing service ready.
